Summary

Homicide detective Eve Dallas must untangle a twisted family history while a hostage’s life hangs in the balance—in Abandoned in Death by New York Times bestselling author J。 D。 Robb。

The woman’s body was found in the early morning, on a bench in a New York City playground。 She was clean, her hair neatly arranged, her makeup carefully applied。 But other things were very wrong—like the tattoo and piercings, clearly new。 The clothes, decades out of date。 The fatal wound hidden beneath a ribbon around her neck。 And the note: Bad Mommy, written in crayon as if by a child。

Eve Dallas turns to the department’s top profiler, who confirms what seems obvious to Eve: They’re dealing with a killer whose childhood involved some sort of trauma—a situation Eve is all too familiar with herself。 Yet the clues suggest a perpetrator who’d be roughly sixty years old, and there are no records of old crimes with a similar MO。 What was the trigger that apparently reopened such an old wound and sent someone over the edge?

When Eve discovers that other young women—who physically resemble the first victim—have vanished, the clock starts ticking louder。 But to solve this case she will need to find her way into a hidden place of dim light and concrete, into the distant past, and into the cold depths of a shattered mind。

A neat story as always!

This one was well-paced and compelling。 I did actually start reading it a couple weeks ago, but had to put it aside because I was not in the right frame of mind for some of the subject matter。The plot was good, the few side jaunts were just enough to keep it from getting too heavy。If you like this series, you'll be pleased with #54。 I was。 This one was well-paced and compelling。 I did actually start reading it a couple weeks ago, but had to put it aside because I was not in the right frame of mind for some of the subject matter。The plot was good, the few side jaunts were just enough to keep it from getting too heavy。If you like this series, you'll be pleased with #54。 I was。 。。。more

This is the kind of Dallas and Peabody story I enjoy *muchly*。 The culprit was amazing, the way it harkened back to 21st century mores was *chef's kiss*, and I just enjoy a good old fashioned serial killer hunt more than I enjoy a who dun it when it comes to the in death series。 I actually missed it the first time around when she figures out the culprit - that pacing was sublime (I read ahead in the paper copy before I finished it in an audiobook)。 This is the kind of Dallas and Peabody story I enjoy *muchly*。 The culprit was amazing, the way it harkened back to 21st century mores was *chef's kiss*, and I just enjoy a good old fashioned serial killer hunt more than I enjoy a who dun it when it comes to the in death series。 I actually missed it the first time around when she figures out the culprit - that pacing was sublime (I read ahead in the paper copy before I finished it in an audiobook)。 。。。more

Another good read by JD Robb。 Like that this sequence of stories builds on the lives of the main characters as well as giving us a great murder mystery to unravel。

Construction on Mavis's house continues apace。 Eve is finding Peabody's starry eyed discussions of colors and finishes more than a little tiresome so she is happy to have the distraction of a new homicide。 It quickly becomes apparent that this killer is attempting to find the mother he lost as a small boy。 He kidnaps women of a similar type and then tries to recreate them in her mold。 Of course, this is doomed to failure and he ends up killing each of his creations。 Now the team is aware that he Construction on Mavis's house continues apace。 Eve is finding Peabody's starry eyed discussions of colors and finishes more than a little tiresome so she is happy to have the distraction of a new homicide。 It quickly becomes apparent that this killer is attempting to find the mother he lost as a small boy。 He kidnaps women of a similar type and then tries to recreate them in her mold。 Of course, this is doomed to failure and he ends up killing each of his creations。 Now the team is aware that he has at least one woman in captivity and that her time to survive is likely running out。 With the help of her crack team - and civilian consultant the mystery is solved quickly。 Seriously, way too quickly。 There is little will the team arrive in time tenseness, in truth, fairly little mystery of who the killer is。 His identity does hit close to home though and this proves unsettling to many of our stalwart crew。Jaime Feeny's genius godson is back。 Rourke is trying to tempt him to the commercial side of life, but he is, as Eve says, a cop through and through, so we can expect to see more of him in the future。 I like these stories but I feel Ms。 Robb needs to start moving them along a bit quicker。 She has introduced children into the mix and if she wants them to age in any semblance of reality time is going to have to move faster for Eve and Rourke。 。。。more

How this book averages 4。4 stars is beyond me。。。 It is really horrible。 I read it quick to just get the bleeding to stop。 Won't be reading one of these EVER again。SPOLIERSAuthor is obsessed with hair and reminding us EVERY SINGLE TIME there's an elevator that the character doesn't like them。 Takes place in the future (2060s) but instead of including anything innovative about the future we have the same technology we use today but we just call it something different。Found out afterwards the the a How this book averages 4。4 stars is beyond me。。。 It is really horrible。 I read it quick to just get the bleeding to stop。 Won't be reading one of these EVER again。SPOLIERSAuthor is obsessed with hair and reminding us EVERY SINGLE TIME there's an elevator that the character doesn't like them。 Takes place in the future (2060s) but instead of including anything innovative about the future we have the same technology we use today but we just call it something different。Found out afterwards the the author is just an alias for Nora Roberts, the poor quality makes sense now。 You can't keep any level of quality with the volume she pumps out。 。。。more

Lt。 Eve Dallas and her team are investigating the murder of a dead woman posed in a children’s playground near the home that her friends will soon occupy。 This long running series always presents something new!

It had a good plot but everything surrounding the plot was too fanciful。 Such beautiful beautiful people investigating the crime and of course they were all rich。 I think it was supposed to take place maybe 30 years from now。 Anyway I am reading it and I will finish it but I don’t care for it。

This one was a big improvement on the last one I read in this series (Shadows in Death) but still only an average read。 I didn’t buy the crime, criminal and motivation and wanted to throw up a little every time I saw ‘baby darling’ on the page。 Also, is it really necessary/ appropriate for Roarke to work on and hear the details of all the crimes his wife investigates? I can buy that on an exceptions basis his unique skills/ tech are required but in this story he was only doing routine searches/ This one was a big improvement on the last one I read in this series (Shadows in Death) but still only an average read。 I didn’t buy the crime, criminal and motivation and wanted to throw up a little every time I saw ‘baby darling’ on the page。 Also, is it really necessary/ appropriate for Roarke to work on and hear the details of all the crimes his wife investigates? So this one felt like a really different approached to a in death book。 The going back to the past felt very new。 This was not a bad book and had some interesting part。 The mother part of the story didn't go as I thought。 I did feel I knew who the killer as soon as they were mentioned。 It was solid book but not a favorite for me。 So this one felt like a really different approached to a in death book。 The going back to the past felt very new。 This was not a bad book and had some interesting part。 The mother part of the story didn't go as I thought。 I did feel I knew who the killer as soon as they were mentioned。 It was solid book but not a favorite for me。 。。。more

Eve Duncan, homicide detective, is at it again。 A women's body found in a NYC playground is clean, hair arranged, and makeup applied。 But she's dressed in clothes that are out of date, with a new tattoo and piercings。 There is a note written in crayon - Bad Mommy。Another mystery with twists and turns。 Eve Duncan, homicide detective, is at it again。 A women's body found in a NYC playground is clean, hair arranged, and makeup applied。 But she's dressed in clothes that are out of date, with a new tattoo and piercings。 There is a note written in crayon - Bad Mommy。Another mystery with twists and turns。 。。。more

Rating is based solely on my reaction/enjoyment level, and not a measure of objective quality。 Because this book is a good book。 It's enjoyable, I liked the bit of a twist at the end。 But also, I didn't enjoy spending so much time with the killer and the kidnapped women (this happens early on and isn't a spoiler); I didn't enjoy the creepy child elements。 I just wasn't in the mood for a narrative structure that creeped me out to that extent。 Stylistically, I'd have preferred to stay with Eve and Rating is based solely on my reaction/enjoyment level, and not a measure of objective quality。 Because this book is a good book。 It's enjoyable, I liked the bit of a twist at the end。 But also, I didn't enjoy spending so much time with the killer and the kidnapped women (this happens early on and isn't a spoiler); I didn't enjoy the creepy child elements。 I just wasn't in the mood for a narrative structure that creeped me out to that extent。 Stylistically, I'd have preferred to stay with Eve and Peabody as the POV, and watch them uncover the creepiness slowly, rather than have to read about it directly。 And there wasn't really enough else in this to make me forgive the book for being creepier than I was in the mood for。 Which is to say that the usual character moments were fine, but nothing special。 There was nothing particuarly unique that made me happy, as there sometimes is。 So a solid installment in a long running series, but by no means a favourite。 。。。more

So I'm a big fan of the In Death series I have been reading them for what seems like forever。 Usually each book is either a 4 or 5 stars for me。 Ugh。。。 this one was a bit of a slog and the first half was slow and the pace was off。 Usually they grab me from the beginning and I read them in a day。 Unfortunately this one didn't get interesting until the second half of the book。 It took me days to read and really didn't fully capture my attention。 I did enjoy it but disappointed it wasn't as good as So I'm a big fan of the In Death series I have been reading them for what seems like forever。 Usually each book is either a 4 or 5 stars for me。 Ugh。。。 this one was a bit of a slog and the first half was slow and the pace was off。 Usually they grab me from the beginning and I read them in a day。 Unfortunately this one didn't get interesting until the second half of the book。 It took me days to read and really didn't fully capture my attention。 I did enjoy it but disappointed it wasn't as good as previous books。 。。。more

Abandoned in Death returns with the tried and true formula of romance and suspense in this futuristic police procedural set in New York City。 The joy of this series is that readers return to see what old friends are up to in their lives both at work and at home。 The rich world building and deep character development are a hallmark of JD Robb/Nora Roberts。 The downside for returning readers is that, by book #54, the plots and villains are also now recurring。 That said, the books are so well writt Abandoned in Death returns with the tried and true formula of romance and suspense in this futuristic police procedural set in New York City。 The joy of this series is that readers return to see what old friends are up to in their lives both at work and at home。 The rich world building and deep character development are a hallmark of JD Robb/Nora Roberts。 The downside for returning readers is that, by book #54, the plots and villains are also now recurring。 That said, the books are so well written, do you care? 。。。more

There seemed to be a lot of padding in the book just to make the book longer。 Much of this could have been reduced of even eliminated。 The story line was creepily engaging, however。 This plot makes Dallas re-examine her own childhood, which is painful for her as it is not a pretty childhood。 The perpetrator is a scary, driven, possessed individual in his effort to punish a Bad Mommy。

Elizabeth Rishor

Excellent These books follow a formula that works。 This one was interesting because of his murderer turned out to be。 But really enjoyable as always。
